The Property

The original Victorian hall is thought to have been built between 1863 and 1896 by a previous Land Agent for the Trevelyan family, former custodians of nearby Wallington Hall, and is built of stone under a slate roof. West Grange Hall is approached via a gated entrance with a sweeping tarmacadam drive leading to the main hall. A solid wood door, until recently the entrance to West Glade Flat, leads to the entrance hall with original Victorian tiled floor and wood paneling to the walls, before a part glazed door with intricately designed stained glass leads through to the main accommodation. The grand reception hall provides an exceptional welcome, with a stunning mahogany staircase with exquisite carvings leading to the first floor, and a wood burning stove set within a stone hearth with impressive stone fire surround. Three principal reception rooms, all of generous proportions, sit on the southern elevation of the property and are accessed from the reception hall. Externally

A range of outbuildings surround the courtyard along with access to West Grange Cottage and West Grange Flat. The outbuildings, which are constructed of the same stone, blend naturally with the main hall and invite a variety of opportunities for development (subject to the necessary consents) with existing stables, tack room, coach house, store rooms and workshop. A wooden built barn is located close to the parking area giving further outside storage.

The formal gardens sit predominantly to the southern and eastern elevation of the main hall and are mainly laid to lawn with a stone paved path surrounding the house. A variety of mature shrubs and plants add interest with two substantial beds set within a dry-stone wall surround flanking central stone steps. A potting shed and greenhouse are discreetly located to one corner of the garden with a stone wall dividing the garden for the main hall and cottage. To the western boundary is an extensive area of mature woodland, adding to the privacy of the grounds, with a variety of well-established trees.

A recently constructed stable block comprising 15 stables with power, lighting and water are situated on an area of hard standing with a further four stables and tack room opposite. An area to the side of the main garden has previously been a tennis court but has more recently lent itself to an arena to complement the equestrian facilities.

The land for the estate sits to the south of the hall and is divided into several paddocks. The paddocks extend, in all, to over 14 acres.

Local Information

Scots Gap is a popular and peaceful village in mid-Northumberland set amidst stunning countryside yet well-placed for access to amenities and regional centres. The village offers excellent local facilities with a village shop, doctors surgery and the renowned Robson & Cowan Country Store. For the outdoor enthusiast the area is a haven for wildlife and there are excellent country walks and bridleways nearby. The market towns of Morpeth and Rothbury provide a wider range of local retail, professional, health and leisure facilities.

Newcastle is also within easy reach and provides further comprehensive cultural, education, recreational and shopping facilities.

For schooling, there are First Schools in nearby Cambo and Belsay, while there is a choice of senior schooling available in Morpeth, Ponteland and Rothbury. In addition, Mowden Hall Preparatory School near Corbridge provides private education from nursery up to 13 years and there are private day schools in Newcastle and Morpeth.

For the commuter, the A1 provides excellent access to Newcastle in the south and north to Scotland. The rail station at Morpeth provides regular main line east coast services. Newcastle International Airport is also within easy reach.
